Installation – APEXA.LINK A1

APEXA.LINK A1 is primarily made for urban e-bikes with center (crank) drive units and plastic motor covers. The tracker is about 10 mm thick and fits inside many e-bike motors – sometimes with minor adjustments. It is not recommended to use on e-bikes that is not frequently used, since the backup battery will eventually run empty. Also e-bikes with metal motor cover can be a challenge since GPS connection can be unstable or even blocked. APEXA.LINK A1 can also be used e-bikes with hub drives (front or rear wheel) as long as the tracker and battery is not directly exposed to harsh weather conditions (not behind a motor cover or similar)

Bosch center drive installation

  1. Disconnect the e-bike battery and charger if already plugged in to charge.
  2. Remove the crank arm and motor cover.
  3. Connect positive cable (red) and negative (black) to a corresponding single-pole cable on the e-bike with 10-100V power supply. Use the following cable splitter. If possible, connect the tracker to wires with voltage when the e-bike is charging and powered on. For example display cable on a Bosch «not-smart» motor or the HPP port of a Bosch Smart System. If connected to a light cable the backup battery will only be charged when the ebike is powered on.
  4. Find a suitable place for the tracker and backup battery and securely fasten it with the following cable ties or double-sided tape. The label marked with “this side out” on the tracker must point out (towards open skies/away from the motor).
  5. Connect backup battery and tracker before reattaching the motor cover and crank arm.

How to remove the crank arm

Some motor covers cant be taken off before the crank arm also is taken off. Most crank arms requires an 8 mm allen key or socket wrench and a crank puller.

How to connect to Bosch motors

Connect to display cables or the HPP port for bike with Bosch Smart System.

Where to place the tracker and backup battery

The tracker should be in a position for best possible reception of GPS signals. The big square on the last picture is GPS antenna. If the battery is left somewhere cold, like being affected by radiant cold from the metal frame, it can have shorter battery life between each charge.

Hub drive installation

APEXA.LINK A1 can work on e-bikes with hub drives as well, as long as it’s 10-100V power supply, possible to obtain GPS connection and that the tracker and battery is protected againt direct contact from harsh weather conditions.
